Francisco Sanz Fominaya

President Federació de Pàdel de les Illes Balears

Dear members of the international tennis federation,

Every day the world of sport never ceases to surprise us for one reason or another. Normally it is usually due to some sporting feat, on this occasion the reason for my surprise is none other than the interference of one sport in another, tennis in padel.

It would be absurd not to recognize that tennis and padel are sports brothers, but brothers that some were born in the eighteenth century and others in the twentieth century. These 200 years of difference makes these brothers have important differences in terms of their different sports idiosyncrasies.

Everyone knows that 200m2 is not the same as 260m2, that having walls is not the same as not having them, that 97cm and 107cm of net height is not the same as 88cm and 92cm, that carbon fiber is not the same that the nylon string of a racket, that serving above the head isn ́t the same as serving below the waist, that with 2 players it is impossible to play padel, that a synthetic material is not the same as grass, the ground or the asphalt, that the pressure of the padel ball is less than the tennis ball (it is true that they are the same color, first coincidence), that the technique to play padel is simpler than that of tennis, that in padel the plays are easier and more dynamic, that the physical training of padel implies a greater training of the lower body because the game is lower down, that the score of the matches is the same (second coincidence), oh no!!, in padel there is a golden point.... In short, there are so many differences between these brothers that it would be difficult to find more than two coincidences between one sport and another.

I am surprised that other sports disciplines "sisters of tennis" such as badminton or table tennis, have not caused interest. What should be the reason? Because if the interest were exclusively sports and for the sake of joining efforts, he would claim all his brothers (Badminton, table tennis...) and not only those who have projection and those who have grown in all areas.

Obviously all this makes me reflect on this sudden interest in making agnostics believe that one sport is a substitute for the other. Padel has become in many countries in the world the second most practiced sport and not only that, but also the one that is practiced the most at an amateur level and with a social
character. Padel is growing on many levels thanks to the work of players, clubs and federations that have been working to grow and reach the top. It is no coincidence that padel has more than 20,000 licenses than tennis in Spain, that more and more tennis clubs are changing their courts for padel courts, that more and more children prefer “la pala” to the racket, it is no coincidence. From the different regional federations and national padel federations, with more than 30 years in some cases, our pillars have been cemented and now our sport has been placed in an important place in the world.

So this interest in padel now and not 20 years ago, what is it due to? Is it not because of the vein that some have found with professional padel? Is it not because the televisions see a possible very lucrative business? Could it be that the different sports brands are multiplying their sales exponentially in a few
years? Professional padel is something very important for all of us who love this sport, but it is not everything. From the federations we work day by day with our  quarries, which are the breeding ground for the professionals of the future, work with our clubs making the competition increasingly extensive and
complete, organizing and training professionals so that padel continues to prosper and grow to unsuspected levels.

Evolution of licenses in the Balearic Islands from 2012 to 2021 (Pádel Vs Tenis)

2022 evolucion padel tenis

The world of padel started from scratch and has never had the infrastructures and means that tennis already had, everything that has been achieved has been due to the work, effort and enthusiasm of those who, from the very beginning and without anyone's help, decided to bet on this sport.
Well, I inform you that we are not going to allow it!!!, with all the respect in the world towards tennis, do not count on us, not everything in the world is money, this is not a toy with which now I have fun and in the future who knows, maybe I'll abandon it. We are going to make it very difficult for them, we will do everything in our power to mobilize all the padel fans in the world so that they do not use us as someone who buys a new whim.

This humble president of a small autonomous federation of Spain with nearly 5,000 padel licences, is not going to stop until padel is recognized for what it is, the sport with the most projection in the world and he is not going to stop until it is recognized it, once and for all, as a global sport with its own personality.

Receive a warm greeting,

Francisco Sanz Fominaya
